Need Help With Copyright.Gov's Status Messages
« on: 11-21-10 at 07:26 am »

Hi,

I have been submitting a variety of literary, artistic, musical, business and computer/video game works to the copyright office. I just went to check the status of one claim that was being worked on over the past few days and now the case is "closed" and the information bar says "no action needed." Does this mean they approved my copyrights and will be sending my certificates? Or does it mean they closed it and it was not approved, all my work is original, and I have proof that I think would be sufficient enough to support my case, but like I said I don't even know if it got rejected it may just have been approved, I just don't know, but am worried, because this is my life's work, so I figured I'd ask you an expert on Intellectual Property Law. Thank you for your help, I cannot begin to thank you enough for your assistance!

Best Regards,

Jordan Freeman

Closed indicates "cases that have been completed by the Copyright Office" See e.g., http://www.copyright.gov/eco/help-case-definitions.html . If you have not received the Certificate of Registration yet you should call the Copyright Office to ask about it as closed can also mean they've rejected the application for one reason or another. If it was rejected you would have been sent a notice explaining why. The phone number for the Copyright Office is (202) 707-5959 or 1-877-476-0778 (toll free). You should also be able to search and find out if your application is registered by checking here http://cocatalog.loc.gov/cgi-bin/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&PAGE=First. I hope that helps.
