Unsurprisingly, they are mostly filled with handwaving arguments about why it's better to go without patent protection and trust your new business friends.  :-\

The scary part for me is how many Inventors I come across who fit bill as in the below link:

Expecting the unrealistic it a all to common trait that I have come across in at least 25% of all Inventors I have come across, 200 plus inventors, if you do not show trust in business how can you expect good business?

No need to go without Patents just get the manufacture to pay for them and enforce them!

Invent or?,
Some products do not need Patents or are not worth it or can be patented, you can beat the market on price point from China for example, in other words its not cost effective for the copy companies here is one below!, not in the short term anyway, hit the market hard, make sales thats the key, I think they sold about 20 million of the Snuggies below, yes the copiers came later, but by that time they made their money and have a branding status being the original.

Trademark is another very good way to protect your product (The Brand), I know of cases when to much is invested in Patents and even with royalty payments, it falls way short of the Patent costs, bad business plan and not understanding the market.

dt-

I am looking to have a prototype built for a safety helmet, namely a helmet used in sport (i.e., football, hockey, etc.).

Any thoughts at all at where I would begin?  I seem to recall there are groups out there that provide affordable, maybe even free/subsidized help to small entity inventors.
