Passed the exam, Now accepting job offers
« on: 11-02-10 at 02:11 pm »

Attention Citizens of IntelPropLawistan:

I've been informed that I received a passing score on the US Patent Bar Examination.  As such, I have decided to entertain job offers for a limited time. Please send all job offers to me via PM on this board.  No calls, please.

Due to the many thousands of job offers I anticipate, I regret that I will not be able to respond to each solicitation individually. Please understand that this is in no way a reflection on your firm's achievements or qualifications.  I will keep each job offer on file should my availability open up in the future.

I sincerely appreciate your interest in my services, and I wish all of your firms the best in future endeavors.

Regards,
xyzzy

And in your job offer, please specify what make and model of company car you anticipate supplying me with, how many underlings I shall have, annual bonus, and other perks so that I may effectively compare your offer with the other thousands I anticipate receiving.

Congrats and good luck!

Thanks!  Though I do worry a bit about the future of IP law and technological innovation in general. If my exam is any indication, it appears that inventors are dying at an astonishing rate.

Invent something, file for a patent, die.  Invent something, don't file for a patent, die.  Invent something, file a provisional, file in Germany, file an International app, enter the US national stage, die.  Invent something, get a patent, seek a broadening reissue, but mysteriously "disappear" before you can sign the reissue oath. Mafia? CIA?  Big oil?  I dunno, but either way, you're probably dead.

At this rate, people are going to just stop inventing things altogether.

Well done, I hope your email box doesn't explode.

I'm a newbee to this forum.  I suppose you are a "freelancer" at the moment.  Could I explore what your rates would be.  I find the patent firms in my area (Silicon Valley) to be very expensive.  Will your rates be similar?

Would anyone venture to guess the odds of persuading a firm in NY to hire an entry level agent... are things improving yet?  (Do I have to ask!?)

I'd much rather get started in IP law as an agent than as an examiner, but with the hiring activity at the USPTO, I'm thinking of applying there anyway.  It wouldn't be my first choice.

I passed the bar two years ago, and have a PhD in a physical science from a top 10 US university, plus several years of postdoc experience.  My current position has been great but I'd much rather be in IP law than in academia, plus I want to get back to the US.

I'm planning on taking a course in PCT preparation in NY in March, and want to start sending out unsolicited letters & resumes.  Do you think my chances are ~75% or ~10% of getting a few interviews while I'm in NY??

Some more things that may influence my candidacy:

I've experience in physics and chemistry, with lots of exposure to optoelectronics, instrumentation, and nano-stuff.  Not enough computer programming or 'pure' electronics exposure to be golden.
I've written an application, using Pressman's text to teach me the basics.  I don't expect a first OA for half a year or so.  (I unfortunately could not afford professional help, though I know it would've been far better to get the advice of an experienced practitioner.)
I've also used PAIR & other search software.

I'd consider other areas outside of NY but I have the idea that there are enough firms in NY so that if I can't get a bite there, I can't get one anywhere.

Anyone want to guess? @xyzzy , have you had any luck?

Which physical science?  Work in chemistry would make you more marketable than would studying astronomy or earth science.

Would you be needing our firm to pay off your law school loans, or were you on scholarship? We would also like to pay for your legal education if you've not yet earned your JD.
