Impossible to find a patent agent job
« on: 10-18-10 at 11:54 pm »

I passed patent bar early this year but it seems that no firm is interested in a patent agent(mechanical background) without IP prosecution experience. I would appreciate sharing your experience of finding a job. I have master in mechanical eng. and have been working for 9 years. Thanks.

I graduated with a BS in ME.  Worked as a process engineer for about a year.  Went to law school.  Passed a state bar exam. Passed the USPTO bar exam.  I began looking for jobs in 2006 and did not have any luck finding a job for over two years.  I ran into the same obstacles you are seeing.  I was lucky enough to find a small firm who was looking for someone with little to no experience.  From everything I read ME appears to be a hard sell these days, which is regrettable since when I entered college 15 years ago ME was considered a pretty stable area in law and manufacturing.  Times change.  Keep your head up and be willing to move or take whatever becomes available to get some prep/pros experience.

seems like there are lots of opportunities out there. in fact, i see lots of ads stating a firm is only seeking agents and NOT attorneys.

Makes economic sense in many cases, just as it looks like more firms are pushing to hire people with newly minted B.S. degrees and pay for them to go to law school, rather than hire a patent attorney at a high salary. I know of one firm in the D.C. area that has been doing this aggressively for a while now.

You will need to move quickly (deadline for apps is October 22), but this fellowship might interest you:

I know both of the attorneys that run the program.  Great people.
