Author Topic: Why can’t I also be an engineer, at least in label?  (Read 644 times)

There’s a recent thread asking if “patent law is more difficult than engineering” and BobRoberts commented describing two types of engineers, and his description got me thinking.

Almost 2 years ago, I started working as a Patent Attorney after working as an engineer for 10 years and the journey has been great. I don’t really mind the work as I think I’m good at it and can be great if completely focused. However, I find myself constantly trying to get involved in engineering projects during my spare time because that and racing are the only things that really excite me. For example, I would never read a case outside of work but I read and develop solutions to things ranging from iPhone apps to mobile payments. Up till today, I still think of myself as an engineer, even though I left the field a couple of years ago.

I don’t think I’m “that” conflicted, at least not consciously; however, I’m starting to think my subconscious is. Are there people out there that never “completely” left engineering? Oh, did I also mention that I also consider myself to be an entrepreneur?

I don't see any problem with wearing different hats in different situations.

Depending on the setting, I'm a grandfather, a Jew, a patent agent, a Yankees fan, a husband, a Wisconsinite, a son, a New Yorker, a Democrat, an anti-federalist, an environmentalist ...

And I'm still a chemist.
