My company's initials are the same as the initials of the Sr. user who has registered the initials in standard character and in the same class. Although the Sr. user is in a different region, arguably the geography overlaps. Question: Short of changing the name of my company, and regardless of the merits, is there any way in which I can use the initials as shorthand, or do I need to alter the abbreviation? If I need to alter the abbreviation, is there any clear cut guidance as to what is adequate for alteration? E.g. instead of XYZ, use XaYZ, or can I use X.Y.Z.? Or what? (The market is business-to-business and is very sophisticated.)

Use the initials where?  If the initials are a registered mark of another entity, don't use the initials in trademark context (e.g., don't refer to yourself by the initials in advertisements). Wanna start a company called Gregarious Motors?  Cool, just don't call yourself GM in your ads.
