Weighing opportunities
« on: 09-13-10 at 03:41 pm »

Any advice, particularly from patent attorneys who have also worked as examiners, would be greatly appreciated. I am a new patent attorney that has found hourly work, amount varies depending on business, with a solo practitioner who is willing to pay me and critique my work, an opportunity I appreciate in this dismal economy. However, I may soon have the opportunity to work as an examiner. For those who have worked on both sides, could you please weigh in working as an independent contractor patent attorney vs. an examiner? Which type of experience would firms typically value more?

As an aside, I have heard that practitioners who go to the PTO have their # made dormant. What is involved to reactivate that important # when one leaves the PTO? Looking down the road, are there any restrictions on current examiners actively applying for associate positions (besides those firms with applications the examiner is working on)?
