Better pay.  Possibly more "high-tech" disclosures.  Hotter secretaries.

That is about all that I can think of.  There are plenty of disadvantages as well.

Ability to switch practices if IP activity dies down?  Although that wasn't really much help in 2008, since the rest of the legal market died down too.

It's not just the secretaries, ALL of the women are better looking.

That's one of the few advantages I've seen.  Sometimes the pay is higher, but that's not always true.  I went from a gen'l practice firm to a boutique and increased my salary a great deal.

One thing gen'l practice firms teach you is how to deal with other lawyers and how different IP is from any other legal practice.  When I say "IP" I really mean patent law, because trademark law is not as different from the other legal practices.  If you work at a high powered boutique I think you tend to lose sight of how unbelievably full of shit the average non-patent lawyer is.

If there was a rep system on this forum, you would have just received positive rep.

You may get more of an opportunity to do  personally satisfying, if it is your thing, pro bono work & work with some increidbly inspiring attorneys.  Social justice etc.

Other than that I can only think of disadvantages based on my limited time practicing IP at big city, big firm.
