I am just a starter. the PLI study package is soo expensive. I am thinking of buying 2nd hand. but how can I know that I will not be cheated? is there any trick to follow?
or shall I just buy new study material?

I bought the PLI course used. There is a little bit of writing in the books. Buying used makes a lot more sense than paying the full price for books that you will only use for a few months. At the end of the day, it is really about putting the time into studying, doing the exercises and the reading. Provided the books are in reasonable shape and not falling apart, I see no reason to have "new" books for the sake of them being new. If you find a concept confusing there are plenty of internet resources to help. So, the support offered by PLI, in my opinion, is not worth the premium price.

Many people have sold their used PLI stuff on ebay including myself.

Let me warn you however. The latest version I think is from 2006 and does not have enough material on some of the main topics the PTO is currently emphasizing for the test. Namely, appeal, reexams and PCT. I got a ton of questions on these topics and had to supplement my PLI by reading the MPEP, etc. I am not sure if PLI has a newer version out to reflect the current trend. I would call PLI up and find out.

If you can afford it, I hear PRG (Prof. Kayton) is outstanding but it may bog you down with details. This may reflect more of what the PTO tests, but it is expensive.

I used PRG, and can attest that it is an excellent prep course.  But if they have not updated the videos recently, do not spring for them.  They are unwatachable.  Unless you don't mind watching a talking head or a shadowy finger pointing to bullet points on an overhead projector slide.

same deal with PLI. at least you guys got bullet points and overheads. we just got john white for 50 hours. my recommendation if anyone is using PLI is to use the audio CDs instead.

what program is good now? what I am studying has nothing to do with law. I am afraid that I can't handle it without help

I used PLI but that was years ago.  My observation was that the PRG materials are much lengthier but useful in daily practice after passing the bar.  If the goal is to more quickly get up to speed to prepare for the exam, the PLI materials may be better as they are more compact.  At least, they were for me.  Of course, no matter what course you take, you will want to know your way around the MPEP and 37 CFR.

it really depends on how much you are willing to spend. if you are looking for a middle of the road type of course, one that's not too expensive and will help you pass, then PLI is good. You can get the materials for about $500 on ebay. You will have to supplement your review, however, as PLI does not do a great job on Appeals, PCT and Reexams.

You can be assured you are not being cheated on ebay by asking for a specific list of everything they are selling in the package and compare that to what is on the PLI website. Usually they post a photo so you can see what you are getting. If not, ask for your money back or complain to ebay. Don't send cash - use paypal.
