Am I commiting copyright infringement?
« on: 06-28-10 at 04:58 pm »

I found a painting of the comedy/tragedy mask and cut and paste the images and slightly altered them and put them on a cover sheet.

Is this copyright infringement? Because the concept of comedy and tragedy mask was not his in the first place.

The answer is the same as last time you asked...  yes, you may be committing copyright infringement.

You are correct that the comedy and tragedy masks, as a concept, can be used by anyone.

However, the individual creative expression of the concept can still be protected by copyright.

You could have drawn your OWN version...  but when you "cut and paste" a version created by someone else, you are infringing on their copyright.

And "slightly altering" them does not change the infringement.
