copyright on movie posters
« on: 02-14-05 at 05:04 pm »

Anyone know if the old movie posters circa 1932 are in the public domain.  Any idea how I go about clearance if they aren't?

Works later than 1923 are not old enough to have clearly fallen
into the public domain.  Back in the old days, there were lots
of ways for works to become public domain including being
published without being registered and failing to renew the
copyright.  Each work would have to be researched independently.

It's possible that if the poster shows a scene from the
movie, the poster may be protectable as long as the movie
itself is protected.
