I innocently put a graphic that may belong to a stock photograph company on a website and have been threatened with a lawsuit if I dont pay them a sum of money that has been demanded - I took photo off immediately.  I am concenred they will start a lawsuit in their jurisidction that will force me to deal with them there when I  am far away from that part of the country although I understand they have to start the lawusit where I live - comments? how to respond further?

Contact an attorney to speak with them on your behalf.  Usually, litigation can be avoided with minimal cost to an "innocent" infringer as you have described.
