Is the Vault.com IP ranking worth anything?  There are a lot of firms I've never heard of... like Irell & Manella and Quinn Emmanuel... are these really two of the best IP firms? 

I've seen rankings of the top firms in terms of applications filed.  Why is this list completely different than the vault ranking?  Which one (if any) is more significant?

They are both California firms, and they both do a lot of IP litigation.

Quinn Emanuel does litigation exclusively.

With Morgan Chu and David Nimmer, Irell & Manella probably has the strongest patent and copyright litigation practice of any CA-based firm. They are also incredibly selective (think Sullivan & Cromwell) and pay incredibly well: http://abovethelaw.com/irell-manella/.
