How much time passes before you know it's a lost cause?  1 week?  2 weeks?

It can take HR FOREVER to get out an offer, depending on the particulars. Generally, if the firm really likes you someone will call you pretty soon after to let know that an offer is in the works.  I've had this happen in a day or two.  Every firm that didn't contact me within a week of my interview didn't get back to me.

It is never a lost cause.  Keep your options open looking at other firms, but never foreclose the possibility that you are going to hear back from a potential employer.

After about 2 weeks my hopes would diminish significantly.  However, there are some outliers.  After college, I interviewed with the USPTO.  Subsequent to the interview, I submitted my resume to another company, interviewed with said company, received an offer, moved across the country, and started working.  After all that I received an offer from the USPTO.  I forget what the exact timeframe was, but I think it was somewhere in the range of 1.5-2 months after my interview.

I went through a recruiting service and from first interview to offer was close to 6 months.  In this economy, no law firm wants to bring somebody in and not be able to keep them busy.

I remember interviewing with PTO people in one of their regional job fairs in the Northeast. This was in March of 2007 I think. I gave up hope when I didn't hear after a month. But then in July, I got a call asking if I was interested. This was unusual because I usually hear whether or not I got a job within 2 weeks of an interview. I guess it all depends on how soon they need to fill a position.
