2005 car accident ticket
« on: 06-05-10 at 10:19 am »

I just passed the exam yesterday.

I had a minor car accident in 2005(car totaled but I survived) for which I got a $150 ticket. I forgot about it until now. What kind of any obligation do I have about it to the OED?

Thanks,

You have an obligation to keep them current up until the time they give you your Reg. No. provided that the fine was over $100.

You might want to check your citation (you may be able to look it up online) and make sure that it wasn't, for example, a $90 fine with $60 in various fees and costs tacked on.  My state, for example, adds all sorts of extra costs--money that goes to the sheriff, money that goes to the court, money that goes to "legal research", money that goes into some kind of victims fund, etc.

And congratulations!

Interesting!

You would think the DMV is centralized and they would have all your driving record together so anyone can access it.

Apparently I have to go to my state DMV to get records of an 5 year old accident, all for $95. OED wants it, not that they want fuss about it, but just for records.

It's possible that I'm mistaken about this, but I think that the total dollar amount is what matters, even if it's split up as a "fine" and "funding for education", and "endangered butterfly habitat preservation fee".  I had the same question about some of my tickets, since that's what Washington state pulls too.

When you say you had the same question, does that mean that you presented the question in writing to the OED, and received an authoritative response in reply that cited to the relevant written agency policy?

I think I called them and asked over the phone.

Yeah, but the problem with that is, with most government agencies, when you ask about matters for which no memo has been circulated, if you get two different government workers on the phone, you're liable to get two different answers.

I wonder if that's what is happening in my case. In any case, I explained what happened to someone processing my application. He told me to put together anything I can and send it in.

How long would it take from passing to my name appearing in the Gazette? Any idea?

For me, it took about 2 weeks for them to receive my materials and post my name for public comment.  It stays up for comment for a month.  Not sure how long it takes after that.  But for some frame of reference, I passed on 4/27 and still have not been granted my registration number and won't be until at least 6/22 after the public comment period is over.
