I also think you're "devolving" or regressing. I mean, you're going back to what is often a stepping stone for careers.

It's one thing to want to be an Examiner - you could like it and it's not a bad living if you can put up with the monotony.

But as a way to reposition yourself for biglaw seems bass ackwards.

Firms look at PTO experience like an evolutionary chart: fish w/ legs < examiner < agent < attorney.  You're effectively "devolving" by going to the PTO, so I don't see that being much of a selling point to firms.  It may also hurt you, should you decide to return to a boutique, since your PTO experience won't be analagous to attorney work.

These are all valid points, I think.  Its one thing to start as an examiner and move to a law firm.  It is another to start as a lawyer, move to an examining position, and then move back.  I know only 1 person who has successfully done that, and his second stint at the PTO was only for 2 months (during which time he did nothing.  Didn't look at a single case.).

One option for using the PTO as l;everage would be to go back as an examiner, work your way up into the solictors office (hard to accomplish), eventually make your way into the BPAI or so other upper level management, and THEN jump ship.  But you sound as though you want your biglaw transition to occur in less than 20 years, so that is probably not a great option for you.

This post is not legal advice.  I am not your attorney.  You rely on anything I say at your own risk. If you want to reach me directly, send me a PM through the board.  I do not check the email associated with my profile often.

Oh, the evil things I could do if became the examiner after everything I've learned in the private practice and especially during litigation... Since the 66,666 reg no. is already taken, they'd have to give me a x6666 phone extension.

I wonder if a custom '66,666' license plate is available in Washington DC?
