Screening interview
« on: 04-17-10 at 08:32 pm »

Hi I currently work at a small boutique (my first gig after my phd).  I recently started applying to big law firms and got a call for a screening interview.  It's good news but I'm wondering what to expect as this is my first interview outside my current job.

Also is it common to fly a candidate in for a screening interview?  I've been talking to the headhunter but I'm contemplating asking for a phone interview, especially if followup interviews require the candidates to be on site again.  Any insight would be appreciated.

I don't think it's all that common.  I'm surprised they're not talking to you over the phone for your screening interview.  But if they want to fly you out, you'd be remiss to trade that opportunity for a mere phone conversation.  Meeting with them face-to-face is much more personal, and asking for a phone interview instead of an in-person interview would demonstrate your lack of interest in the firm.
