Are there any search software that anyone can recommend rather than just the keyword based USPTO site?

Hi Junkie,

Here are a few FREE sites I've used and found to be robust and offer some great features:

Sumo Brain
http://www.sumobrain.com/
Many different search options and if you register for free, you can save workfolders, searches and get pdf's.
"offers cross-collection searching, portfolios, alerts, and other collaboration tools, as well as bulk PDF downloading and more!"

Patents.com
http://www.patents.com/
Again, sign up for free for extra features. Re. the search, this is from their ADV. search page,
"Advanced patent search provides a patent search tool with a drop down menu for searching keywords, terms or other information against the most common search fields. A patent search can be conducted using more than one field at a time by additing additional field boxes through use of the "And/Or" conjunction box. You can use wildcards within Advanced Search"

Palmer Patent
http://www.palmerpatent.com/
A niche site for software and business method patents, i.e., class 705, etc. Great display with highlighting, "PalmerPatent is a structured collection of software and business patents created for a quick patent look up in either area of interest. There is a search engine in place to complement the structure, with a keyword highlight feature to help locate target keywords. The search can be conducted not only over the software and business classes but across 470 classes, allowing for a quick reference if the need arises."

Google patents also works in a pinch. Quick downloads, intra pdf searching, etc.

For international stuff, try the WIPO site and Espacenet.

For free resources, I recommend SumoBrain (as previously mentioned) or the mostly similar freepatentsonline.com

Google Patents works perfectly for casual research, and as a great supplemental source for inventions that are low-tech or otherwise may have been patented pre-1970.  For the most part though, while it works great as a starting point, it is not recommended as a primary source as it works imperfectly, offers limited advanced search functionality, and Google's database is not 100% up to date and only includes US patent publications...

There are free software programs out there designed for patent searching as well, but I haven't seen any free programs that work better than using the USPTO's web site (at least for searching purposes).  The free programs are usually somewhat gimmicky...

IF free isn't important to you, I doubt you'll find any software that works better than the search functionalities on Delphion.com.  I mean, there is software out there that is really complicated, but it is generally geared towards those who want to be able to copy and paste a paragraph and run a search off of that.  Delphion provides for all the control and advanced search capabilities anyone really needs - here is one example of a Delphion search string (and it's not even as long or complicated as it could be) -

Our university research has led to a novel patents search engine, which applies cutting edge relevance algorithms to discover the most relevant patents for a query.
In addition to the specificity and sensitivity of the results, which is our primary focus, our system offers a rich set of features like filtering, advanced search conditions, pdf creation, Excel export, and more.
