Got the same response as bigyellowjoint.  Similar experience (3L w/ IP classes, 1 summer program).

Oh well..

just reapply when they start hiring new examiners. You may have to wait until November/December for the it to start. however, that's not too bad since you are a 3L. Just sit for the bar this summer and hang out a few months. once you start at the PTO, they'll put you through some training (around 8 months paid).

you may not have to wait too long. I think a few posts back someone mentioned that they would start hiring inexperienced in April, but like everything you read take it with a grain of salt. Just be patient, because they have to hire sooner or later. Start dates won't be until near the end of the year anyway.

BYJ & Nova - I'm sorry to hear! I didn't receive any notification good or bad today. Do you think they would do these in batches or only today? The reason I ask this is b/c on the website, it says March 16-March 30 they let you know if you "meet eligibility and qualification req". Part of me wants to say that they either a) haven't gotten to many apps yet or b)still deciding whether people qualify. I wonder if I still have hope, and further wonder if applicants are notified either way. I don't know if it's (b) b/c you guys have already heard back. - PS, that email they wrote was not cool! loL

Also, if you dont mind sharing, what were your guys technical majors? Do you think the PTO has certain majors/disciplines they are looking for or are in demand?

Thanx! Smiley

My background is Computer Engineering.  Good luck to both of you!

As an aside my US jobs updated first, and then I got an email, so keep checking the US jobs thing.

I also haven't heard anything yet.  I submitted my application right before the deadline, so I'm assuming that's why I haven't heard back yet.  I guess I'll just keep checking my email.  If I have to submit my resume again, I'm going to go through USA Jobs.

I'm a Chemical Engineer.

I received the email this morning that said "You met the basic education qualification requirements; however, lacked the required specialized experience."  Later this afternoon my "Application Status" changed on usajobs to "Minimum Qualification Requirements Met."

So I got 2 updates that seem to contradict each other.  If I had to guess, I would assume that I didn't make the cut since I only loosely meet the 1 year experience requirement (you'd have to add up all my classes and summer internships).

hi everyone. had a question for the PTO experts out there.

do you what kind of pay could i expect if i were to work for the USPTO?

undergrad: polisci & history (2001)
master's: computer science (2009)
law school: (2004)
admitted to california bar for 5 years, solid litigation experience of 2 years
passed patent bar october 2009
registered patent attorney since december 2009

been doing contract work for a solo for the past 2 months. mostly office action responses involving integrated circuit design.

obviously, i'd be going into the pto as a newbie, anyone know what GS level and/or stepping i'd likely qualify under?

They usually don't higher GS-11's fresh anymore (retention issues). They will probably stick you at a GS-9 step 8-10 range. That puts you anywhere from 75K-79K (http://apps.opm.gov/SpecialRates/package/table057601012010.html). I don't know if they are still doing the retention bonuses. If they are, you will receive a computer science bonus which is 5K/year for 4 years (20K total).

Promotions are every year up until GS-13 (provide you have good production). The exception is the accelerated promotions (1 if you start GS9, 2 for GS<=7) at the beginning of your career which are six months
Best case scenario
0: GS 9/8
6 months: GS 11/5
1.5 years: GS 12/3
2.5 years: GS 13/1 (required to pass exam)
3.5 years: GS 14/1 (partial sig+Masters level; if you don't do masters level you won't become a 14 until you're a primary which will take around another year)
4.5 years: GS 15/1 SPE (competitive)

to get to GS 13, the patent bar exam will suffice. you don't have to take the certification test they administer.
