What book would you recommend to someone about to start work as an IP attorney doing both litigation and prosecution?

Are you looking to practice in Patents (if so, what art(s))? Trademarks? Copyrights?

Patents.  I'm not looking for anything related to a specific art, just a good book to lay down the fundamentals.

Do you have much/any experience in Patent prosecution or Litigation (i.e., from a summer internship)?  Are you looking to go out on your own as a solo, or start work at a law firm (preferred)?

If money is no object (wouldn't that be nice), I may start with a good Patent Bar Review Course (even if you don't want to take the PAtent Bar right now), as it will introduce you to the MPEP, and the basics of PAtent law and even claim drafting.

You could go to the USPTO web site and review random sections of the CFR for patent prosecution (becoming familiar with the basics of a patent application) and the MPEP for prosecution and one way that cases discuss the various aspects of Obviousness (103) and Anticipation (102), etc...

You could go to your local Law library and spend time there reading CHISM on Patents by Donald Chism...  Start with the basics about Patents and read about Obviousness and Anticipation, or anything else that tickles your fancy.

The ususual combination I usually reccommend to anyone is Pressman/Sheldon/Landis for patent prosecution, but you may be too advanced for Pressman. For litigation, I think the best place to start - aside from the obvious of just being a good litigator - is a book written by one of the leading authorities in this area, Herbert Schwartz, which he wrote for Federal Judges and has been updated recently. It is concise. There is also a book on patent litigation which is very good by Lupo, moore, et al with that very title. There is a section in it on standards for review that is very helpful.
