Oilfield patents
« on: 03-30-10 at 01:27 pm »

How is the market for oilfield patents? I know that a patent search company close by is looking for someone with oilfield experience to help with their searches. This doesn't interest me (useless job experience I believe?), but I was interested in if the oilfield background would help looking for a job as an agent/attorney. Thanks in advance!

My opinion: generally, a law firm will want someone with good science/engineering knowledge, but if you are in texas,
some of the firms there (and there a lot of them firms that do patent work), do prosecute a lot of patents on things like drilling equipment, so your experience could be useful. Actually, a firm in texas asked me to come work form them once based on my knowledge of geophysics (my first field) and communications. Didn't take it, though, so I guess I missed out on a life of bourbon, boredom, and barbeque. W

When the recession ends, people are predicting it (oil industry) will pick up, in my opnion fairly strongly, so maybe a long range goal of agent/attorney in prosecuting in this area is a good idea. But remember, the more specialized you are, the harder you fall later, as I once learned.

Interesting, the Howard Hughes supposedly made his fortune off of a patent that he got the idea from when someone told him in a bar. I once looked at old patents, and found something nearly identical to it that would have qualified as prior art. Maybe I am wrong, hard to believe.
