Hi All,

I am a graduate student who will graduate this spring with a PhD in Pharmacology. I think I could really enjoy a career in patent law and I am starting my search for employment in the Palo Alto/Bay Area as a "patent specialist". If I like the work, I think I would want to pursue a JD degree so I could expand my career options. It would be wonderful if I could find a law firm or a company that is amenable to putting their patent agents through night law school.

Does anyone know of any law firms in the Bay Area that have generous tuition policies? How does one go about finding out which firms or companies are willing to do this (other than during the interview)?

Thanks so much

Actually, Fish + Neave (recently acquired by Ropes and Gray, though still identified as F+N within R+G) has an office in Palo Alto. I additionally see that they have at least one Technical Advisor and one patent agent in the Palo Alto office.

Hello,

I'm also a recent PhD graduate, looking for firms in the Houston, TX area who would support the same type of transition from biotech studies to patent agency, with a possibile interst in pursuing a JD over time.

Is anyone aware of any law firms in TX who are currently hiring agents and are putting them through law school in the meantime?

Thanks

You might talk to somebody at Howrey Simon.  They have a substantial biotech practice in Houston, although I don't know if they still hire patent agents for their Houston office.  But if you talk to an associate there, they can point you to other Houston firms that might.

Thank you so much for your responses. I will definitely take a look at Fish and Neave. If anyone else knows of additional firms in the Palo Alto area (or in the general area even extending to San Francisco) that also have programs that put patent agents through law school, I would love to hear about it!

Thanks again.
