In the case of design or architectural drawings, does the copyright protect the drawing itself from duplication or the object or building represented by the drawing?

Generally speaking, both the drawings and the actual product/building are subject to copyright protection, although under different copyrights.  Thus, copying either the drawings or the product/building they depict is likely infringing.
