Becoming a Patent Attorney
« on: 01-27-05 at 10:15 am »

Hi:

I have a B.S in Computer Engineering and a Master's in Computer Science. Since graduation (5 years ago), I have been working for a company that conducts research in areas such as Intrusion Detection, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining in the Computer Science domain.

I have developed some technical writing skills as we are required to write proposals every year. A few of my proposals have also been competitively selected for award by US govt agencies for research funding.

Lately I have been visiting this forum as I've developed an interest in Patent Law and the steps neccessary to become a Patent Lawyer.

Due to personal reasons (I'm originally from India) I will be moving back to Asia (Singapore or India) 5 years from now.

Any answers to my questions will be greatly appreciated.

1. I would like to focus on writing software patents. Considering my background, am I in a good position to pursue this line of work ?

2. As a US citizen and a US Patent Attorney, is it possible to find work in this field in Asian countries such as Singapore and India ?

3. I'm also interested in international law. Is it possible to work simultaneously in both fields - Patent law and International law ?

Thanks in advance

Best Regards

Sid.

US patent application drafting is increasingly being offshored to India:

So, in a few years you will probably be doing more IP work if you live in Bangalore than if you live in Silicon Valley.  The rest of us in the USA should start looking for jobs at McDonalds now, before the rush is on...
