Locating a Deceased Patent Attorneys Name
« on: 02-21-10 at 11:07 am »

I am hoping this may be the appropriate Forum for this question, please pardon me if it is not.

I am looking for the name of a patent attorney from the State of Colorado,

who at one time, (1999) was listed in the yellow pages, I believe he died in the year 2000 or 2001, but I need to know his name, and have lost it.

I have tried to locate him through contacting other Patent Attorneys still practicing in his county, but could not find him.

Is there a way that you may be able to help me find his identity ?

I have sent a query to the Library of Congress referencing, Phone Book archives, however I think that may take longer than my needs require, I will appreciate any ideas you may have.

You'll get better suggestions from the patent folk once the weekend passes.  They'll know what you may be able to get directly from the PTO.  But meanwhile, if you have the patent number of any patent the attorney filed for, you could try looking up the patent at one of the patent websites to see if they show the attorney name.

(Patent Storm should do this.  PTO probably does also, but I couldn't see attorney/agent info when I ran a patent number search there.  Probably would have seen it through the patent images search, but my Quicktime wasn't working right.  Patent Storm had the full info: www.patentstorm.us.)

You could also try using something like the "wayback machine" or other archival web searches listed at http://www.searchengineshowdown.com/others/archive.shtml to see if you can pull up any old web pages from 1999 which might have listed registered patent attorneys in Colorado.  Also, if you haven't checked Colorado newspaper death notices/obits, that might be an avenue to explore if you know the approximate time frame when he passed on.  Not a sure thing, but if search terms other than names can be used, you could try "patent" or even just "attorney" and scan the resulting list to see if any name rings a bell.   Some public libraries have subscriptions which permit patrons to access to online periodical archives (like they used to sometimes have microfilm archives).

This post is an off-the-cuff musing and should not be misconstrued as legal advice. THERE IS NO ATTORNEY-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN US. Proper legal advice requires full disclosure of facts-not appropriate to a public forum-and attorney research time and effort which has not been expended here.
