So how bleak (or bright???) is the situation for a patent agent with a PhD(Organic Chemistry), who is trying to get into the market? Is there any light at the end of the tunnel?

Still pretty bleak for individuals with no experience.  For those that hav e some experience, there are opportunities available (though not many).

What market are you trying to get a job in?  I just saw this week the first patent agent opening in my area (RTP, NC) listed in the past 6 months.  Too bad it was for EE and not biotech  :-\
