If you wrote your lyrics down, they are protected by copyright.  You can register the copyright with the copyright office.  The details can be found at:

http://www.copyright.gov.

It's not expensive to register your copyright.

Make sure that you are aware of what registering your copyright will or will not do for you.   Registering will not get your lyrics in front of a publisher or get a singer to sing them.

My intellectual property teacher in law school was a member of a band in the 70s.  She told us that she registered the bands lyrics periodically (every few months).

Registering your lyrics is probably a good idea.  You can do it yourself.  A lawyer is really not necessary if you can follow the instructions on the Copyright Office's web page.

What is more once isssues have been raised the next unknown is the way the decider responds, there is also appelate review, usually with more than one judge. There may be further appeals. There are 9 judges on the Supreme Court.

It can also be too expensive for the party to be able to support.

Law itself is maelstrom of confusion until there is a challenge and/or a decision.

It's 30 dollars and I can get a lot of lyrics for that. It is important because I do not wish to have things that I wrote about that I have emotions about to be stolen from me. It is my band and I need to get this done and I do not care if you don't believe I need to.
