Hi,

I'm planning on copyrighting software that I have developed. Does a copyright take effect when you register, or do you have to wait for months?

Thanks,
Steve

A copyright is effective as soon as an original work is fixed in a tangible medium of expression.  However, if you create a work in the US, you must register before seeking a remedy in court.

Agreed with Isaac, and to follow up, the "effective date of registration" is the date on which all of the application materials are received by the copyright office, NOT the date the copyright office sends you a certificate of registration (which could take months).
