Advice on school and location for BSCS to LS?
« on: 11-18-09 at 05:07 pm »

Background: BSCS from a top engineering school, 171 LSAT 3.2 UGPA, 1 year WE in software development/financial services, and a couple prominent internships.

Already applied to a number of law schools for the Fall 2010 cycle, peppered across the top 20 LS and a few safeties in CA, NYC, DC.

My question is, assuming I want to go into PATENT law specifically, and preferably patent LITIGATION or PROSECUTION (and yes I know software isn't exactly the most patentable medium), what is the best location/school for someone with a computer science background?

What difference is there in the job market for COPYRIGHTS and TRADEMARKS as opposed to patents? If it might be better to consider copyrights for software, does this change the location preference?

Also, how important is location vs. prestige/ranking/reputation when it comes to intellectual property law?

Thanks in advance.

Go to the best school that you like.  CA and DC arguably have the biggest patent law job markets.

Copyrights and trademarks can be handled by any attorney.  I don't understand why you think they might "change the location preference", whatever that is.

In today's job market, you'll want to go to as strong a school as you can, and do as well as you can.

JMHO.

I was led to believe that IP job markets were centered in certain areas. I asked about location preference because I figured software in particular might be concentrated in some part of CA, and I figured that dedicated patent shops and other firms might be in different locations, that's all. Thanks.

Law school name used to be nearly irrelevant to finding a position in patent prosecution.  Anecdotally, it seems like that's changing.  I'd go to the best school I could in this job market.
