Good idea for a career change?
« on: 01-09-05 at 04:02 pm »

I'm a physicist with a Master's degree and twenty years of industry experience.  My current position is VP of Engineering.  Basically, I'm looking for an alternative career that will keep me busy and pay the bills for another twenty or so years.  I'm an inventor, hold more than a dozen  US patents and have about a dozen in process.  I also happen to love the out of doors and have a beautiful home in the mountains.  I'd rather work there more than somewhere else.  I'm thinking of studying for the patent bar and becoming a patent agent.  Comments?  Any opinions on the best self-help courses?  Is a self-help course a bad idea? 8)

The most efficient way to pass the patent bar is to simply study old exam questions. Good luck.

Without training in a law firm (big or small), having passed the patent bar is pretty useless in and of itself.  You can take and pass the exam without ever having much of a clue about how to practice patent law, unfortunately.  In the end, you hang your shingle as a patent agent, and then... good luck finding clients without any experience or training.

It seems like your best option is to work with the legal department of the company where you are currently VP.  Chances are they would jump to have someone with your level of experience be a patent liason or patent agent in-house.  They would also be able to suggest or supply training materials to pass the patent bar exam.
