NYTimes article.

Nothing really new here for those that keep up with these things.. basically firms that exist mainly to buy, sell and license patents.

It is more interesting that the general public is now becoming aware of these things. I think it is also a slight indication that the economy is turning around. At least in the patent world.

Thanks for the article; I was surprised to see that money was starting to flow back into stuff like this.

By the way, the mention of "firms that exist mainly to buy, sell and license patents" reminds me that the Patent Troll Tracker defamation suit is supposed to be going on soon or maybe was last week.  Anyone following that?

The defamation suit is already underway.

PatentlyO.com had a post on it a few days ago - http://www.patentlyo.com/patent/2009/09/troll-tracker-defamation-lawsuit-trial-underway.html .

I can see a large telecomm business bidding and winning their patents and then turning out and suing handset manufacturer's for infringing on their new-found property rights. I say large, because they need more cash flow than what Zoltar had for litigation. In their case, auctioning patents seem to be the way to go. It's a latch ditch effort to milk it as much as possible before your company fizzles out of existence since their entire book value was based off their IP.

…but hopefully you only get a month's supply of letterhead, etc. printed up at a time. Once they become wastepaper, there's only so many versions of paper airplanes even an engineer can come up with.
