Is industry/R&D experience critical?

I am a first year PhD student in biochemical engineering and am looking at IP law as a potential future career.

I wonder if it's critical/beneficial for me to obtain a certain number of years of industrial/post-doc experience before going on to becoming a patent agent.  ???
