1L Grades
« on: 06-23-09 at 03:35 pm »

Hi all,

I just finished my first year of law school with a 2.75 (my school is ranked top 10 in IP). I have a strong undergrad GPA of 3.5 in EE and I have passed the patent bar. I am prosecuting patents for a small firm this summer (for free). Grades were just released and I'm discouraged with my results. My grades will surely go up in the next two years since that nasty mandatory curve won't be in effect in all my classes. However, how do you feel my chances are at working at a good firm next summer? Obviously all they will have to go on is my 1L grades. I'm starting to consider whether I should take a leave of absence or if it is even worth it spending another 60k over the next two years. I would love to hear your perspective on all this.

Thanks for being so helpful. I love this board.

2.75 is not bad for a top 10 school (especially a good one in the DC area, right?  :)). Eventually, you will only have the school name on your resume, and your GPA will be superflous, and no matter what, your EE will carry the day. I don't even need to say whether you should take a leave of absence. Anyway, best of luck on what will undoubtedly be a highly successful career.

Thank you for your reply. I should clarify that my school is T10 in IP only and ranked much lower in everything else.

Hang in there, buddy.  If you're already prosecuting patents, you're in a good spot.  Your GPA only affects your first job.  So, just stay diligent with your real work and relax.  Even the Supreme Court does not understand con law - that's why every decision is 5-4.
