: : Dear Liz,

: : I am just a 2nd year law student so please don't take what I say as legally binding.

: : From what little I know about it, idea submission is a very sticky subject. I believe that if you give your idea to the organization freely then chances are they will get to use your idea and you will have no remedy.

: : However, since you are submitting information to a rather large organization, they probably have specific forms and contracts that deal with just your kind of problem.
: : Your best bet is to first contact a lawyer to go through the contract and bargain with the organization.

: : However, if you can't afford that, make sure you read their contract or understand their procedure and determine if there is a waiver of whatever rights you may have in your idea.

: : In submitting information to a large corporation the worse thing you can do is sign a waiver saying that they will not be liable for taking your idea and giving you no compensation.

: : Sorry I can't be of any more help, be on your guard for that waiver,

: : : i have a great idea and would like to license it thru the nfl and or nba. i am familiar with the nfl application process and i am sure the NBA is similar. but my question is, what if i am denied by the NFL or NBA after i apply, can they take MY idea and use it? if so, what can i do about it? how can i protect myself, if i even can? any info is appreciated.
: : : thank you

: thank you for your opinions and suggestions. we'll see what happens.
: thanks

Dear Liz,
The odd a very high that if you sign an agreement to submit, that you will be giving away the farm on the submission unless you have been advised by an IP lawyer that you can trust.
