Trademark Infringement?

My employer has created an information system that we wish to use as a marketing tool for our other services. We have selected a mark similar to that of another entity in the same field. Neither mark has been registered. However, there are several registrations for a mark identical to the competitors' in other industries. Can my company use its chosen mark and should it be registered immediately.

Any advise is appreciated. Thanks in advance.
