Generic names generally speaking cannot be registered for the goods or services in which they are most commonly known. Otherwise that would give the owner an unfair monopoly over the term. (see www.genericnamesonline.com)

For example, SOAP cannot be a trademark for handwashing liquid (as it is generic) but it could be registered as a trademark for shoes, since it is "fanciful or arbitrary" when considered in context of the goods.

Similarly, "Meteorologist" might be registerable for a sausage maker, but not for a weatherman.

Trademarks can be opposed prior to registration or a CANCELLED during the initial 5 years after registration if a person who may be harmed by the registration files a petition (which is a complaint, inititing litigation) with the trademark registry where the mark is registered.
