: I am an author and wish to make reference to two TV series in my novel -- as a hypothetical example, something along the lines of "Mary loved watching 'FakeTVSeries' every Wednesday."

: What must I do to make this an appropriate use of a trademarked title? I know I've seen novels in which such references are made, and often at the beginning in the copyright area you'll see a disclaimer like, "'FakeTVSeries' is a registered trademark of YaddaYadda Inc." or something like that. Does anyone know where I might find the correct wording to send to my publisher?

: Many thanks in advance for your help.

Dear Ms. Lerner,
Unless you copy expression or engaged in unfair acts, there is freedom to express ideas as long as the mode of expression of others is not copied. You can deal with the subject matter of others. Even story themes are generally not protected.

If I recollect correctly the take off on Gone
With The Wind may have survived legal attack.
