: It seems like that most law firms require "a technical background". But
: it isnt quite clear as to how technical it should be. I am currently in
: Grad school studying chemistry. I could either graduate next year with a research Masters or
: wait a few more years and get the PhD. Is there a real advantage if I get the PhD or is that almost considered "overkill"?
: Is a PhD really needed and what would be the benefits of having one instead of a Masters degree? Thanks for any answers.

Qualification to take the Patent Bar is one consideration. To get that answer Click on the Patent Page of this Forum and get to the PTO and get the prerequisites. They have gone up in recent years.

It looks as if the whole law business is going crazy with changes. There seems to be a frenzy to hire in all aspect of the law. Intellectual Property, for years, long neglected is the fore front of legal need.
Chemistry may not be in the information frenzy. Check on the market and make the decision that best suits you, education or money?

I'm not sure of the answer, either way.
