can you patent an idea for a product?

: Im just a youngster with idea's for a few gadgets that : are possible to make[though I haven't the technical knowledge how nor the resources(money, people, a company)]. I might try to talk with some venture capitalists concerning resources for designing and selling such gadgets but if they like my ideas whats to stop them from taking them or biting me(there known as sharks you know)?? : Could someone give me some advice on this subject?
