: What does a provisional application do? Do I lose the international right if a provisional is filed? How much does a provisional filing typically cost? The filing a provisional application preserves international rights. They are lost by divulging or using before filing. The cost depends on the the complexity. The filing fee is low. My concern with a provisional application is that is can be filed quickly but for patent validity it must be written to fully support the scope of the claims that give the protection desired. There are many slips between cup and lip. M.
