You can pay a fortune to get a patent and have it be of no value even before it is filed. The lowest basic Goverment filing fee starts at $345. An unlicenced practicioner usually charges at least several thousand dollars for an application that that can be of no value and even legitimate practicioners may obtain patents whose protection does not cover the scope of the invention. There is no upper limit to the cost of a patent application, depending on its complexity. I start with a "Reality Check" to screen the disclosure as to what can and can't be done and alternatives. M.
