Classes

I would take technical and persuasive writing classes. I would shy away from some of the customary pre-law classes. Law schools want a diverse student body and that includes people that didn't take the traditional pre-law classes!!

I would however take some economics classes-- at least microeconomics. Law is highly tied up with economics. In advising clients on IP, you will need to be able to understand thier business as well as the law to give them the best advice. Economics will help you to understand business.

Internships at Law Firms

Some law firms will hire undergards to intern. However, they are few and far between -- especially in this economy when law students have trouble finding internships. If you do get an intership, it will most likely just be clerical work (e.g. coping documents, assembling documents, proofreading, filing, etc) since you do not have any legal training. Law firms do like legal experience, but mots law students do not have law firm experience prior to law school.

I think it is unwise to try and get law firm experience. It is better to get some industry experience. I would try and get an internship in your electrical engineering major. Firms value industry experience -- something holding me back in competing for a summer associate positions at top law firms, now that I'm in law school. You may also want to try and get an internship at the USPTO. They have a summer program for undergrads, but not law students. I would take advantage of it, if possible.

: Hello!
: I'm currently a sophomore majoring in electrical engineering, and have recently developed a strong interested in pursuing IP law as a career. Browsing through this forum, I noticed that there are an abundance of knowledgable people in this area (this being an IP board =) )and was wondering if anyone could assist me with certain questions that I have.

: Seeing that I have 5 semesters left in my undergraduate experience, I have certain flexibility as to what non-engineering courses that I can take. After reading through boards and websites, I'm under the impression that classes that emphasize writing are strongly recommended. Exactly what type of writing classes would these be? i.e. would technical writing classes be better than more customary pre-law classes like philosophy, history, etc. And are there any other types of classes unrelated to writing that would be benefical?

: Also, is an internship at a law firm as an undergraduate something that would be worth looking into, or even possible? It seems that law firms are only looking for students already in a law school. And even in the case of managing to secure a said internship as an undergrad, would it be an unwise choice so early in, seeing that law school is by no means a guarantee?

: I was also wondering if anyone would be willing to answer more questions by e-mail. I'm sure I will have more in the future.

: Thanks for any responses - they are greatly appreciated!
: Ken
