For US patent, foreign patents, and trademarks, $26,000 is NOT out of line. You can try to do it yourself but I would not recommend it. The intracacies of patent writing are a pain in the behind. The rules and regulations on patent writing (called the MPEP) can be found at the below link. I think it's about 1700 pages long. If you want to save money, see if you can find an independent patent agent to do it for you as opposed to a patent lawyer.
