Go ahead and do it yourself. But, first, ask how are you going to get your money back from the "patent" you MAY get.

Tradesmen reap huge profits from "do-it-yourselfers".

However, Patents are different. Even a skilled professional may not be able to correct your mistakes. Its often a one shot deal.
