Take LOTS (I mean LOTS) of writing classes. If you are going to go with microbiology, engineering, or some other requisite degree required by the USPTO, you should fortify your degree with extra writing classes (I would suggest technical writing classes as a start) as it would help you in your major and would pay dividends going to law school. I've seen too many engineers (mostly EE professors) put on the chalkboard misspelled words, grammatical mistakes, and what have you. In the case of engineering academia, you may garner the wisecrack smirks of students and that's about it. Try doing that in a professional environment with some senior law firm partners, multi-million dollar clients, judges, and even patent examiners (to say the least). Poor writing skills (hopefully long corrected before law school) would get you laughed at or worst, fired, and possibly even shouted at by some tough no-nonsense judge in a IP prosecution courtroom setting. Bottom line is you want to enter into patent law with as much writing skills as you can learn. Good luck!
