Dear Holly Ambruster,
Patents are big bucks and easy to get. What you need to do is to understand whether a broad patent can be obtained.
One of the best patents I have ever gotten is still not making money. A company we showed it to won a $50 million dollar prize, thats what I said $50 million to turn out a similar product, not infringing the patent without infringing that patent.
