: Can anyone tell me what are the first few steps one should take to find out if their idea is worth patening?

Dear Ms. Honan,
A consultation with an Intellectual Property Lawyer you can trust would help. It is not the lawyers job to determine the value of an idea but there are some ideas the are obviously unprotectable.
There are some lawyers that make a fortune protecting valueless ideas. It may not even be malpractice to get a patent that is of no value. there is a $100M+ a year getting patents that are are no value and even some patent lawyers engage in such practices.
