: Can I apply for a patent if I use (or plan to use) : an existing dying chemical (or with some modification) : to a fabric in such a way that it has never been done : before and brings out special changes to it and is : highly usable and marketable. The first thing to do is to keep it secret. It will avoid problems in the US and preserve foreign rights. The next thing is a good patent search to determine the likelihood of being able to get a patent. Patents are not rubber stamps to making money. The claims must broadly cover the invention. There are different strategies for each situation. It is easy to spend a bundle and waste money. A good patent may not make money. The season or marketing may not be right. Each situation is different. Pet Rock made big bucks. M.
