I am trying to learn more about patent interference. Can someone tell me what it is?. In a nutshell, does it mean that two inventors have identical claims? Is this a pretty black and white topic.

What I mean is suppose Doctor X invented aspirin in 1945, and his patent attorney wrote claims directed tword aspirin as a pain reliever. 500 miles away, farmer Smith invents aspirin as a method of stimulating growth of pigs. His attorney files a patent on aspirin with claims to aspirin as a method of stimulating pig growth.

Would the two parties 1945 simultaneous pending patents constitute an interference?
