The Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) administered by WIPO (see link) addresses that specific issue--by filing one single patent application which can have legal effect in now up to the 120 countries which are party to the PCT, you can get more time than provided for under the traditional patent system to evaluate your invention and its prospects and high quality information about the potential prospects of your invention for patentability. You will still have to "enter the national phase" and decide in which countries you wish to specifically pursue patent protection, but the PCT is a strategic and cost-effective way to start the process of seeking patent protection multinationally.

Dear Matt,
You overlook the fact that the countries must be selected and filed in and the cost is multipled by each country you ultimately file in. How many client can afford heavy international filing?????????
